Summary

The idea

The idea that was used for this application is a relatively new concept; there isn’t really any other app that uses the same method of allowing the user to make a choice that will affect the outcome of the sequence that is played. The app was designed to be fun for the user but also has a serious undertone.

There aren’t really a lot of other drink awareness apps in the current market either which leaves an opening for a new innovative app to be made. The closest app that was found was an app that gives a tour of the human brain showing the effects of alcohol.

The tasks

The tasks that are shown is the blog were very useful in their own ways, they are all very unique in the sense that each task focuses on different aspects of distribution, advertising and online services.

The task titled ‘The news is snow’ shows how social media sites and online news articles can over exaggerate a story, during January of this year there was a lot of snow which started the publishing of many media articles about the problems the snow is causing, this then prompted social media users to post pictures of the snow and post their concerns about the weather. This shows how much of an influence and impact that the media can have over the way in which people think. The social networking aspect of this task also shows how something as simple as the weather can become an internet sensation within hours of it happening.

Task 3 was to design a marketing campaign for Ghostbusters 3, this task is really useful for coming up with quick and innovative ideas than could be used to market a film, the marketing campaign for Ghostbusters 3 helped with thinking about how a film like this (a franchise film), could take advantage of the already iconic aspects of the Ghostbusters franchise such as the theme tune, the logo, the car etc. The task also helps when considering the release date of the film, as the film will need to gain ‘hype’ before it is released, this way more people will be made aware of the film and more people will go to see it.

The task titled ‘Advert for online service’ was a task that involved creating a storyboard for any online service, the service that was chosen was Gumtree.com, this advert was deliberately made to be fun and to not take itself too seriously. This advert was designed in a similar style to some of Gumtree’s previous advertisements. It was done in this style so that the audience would be able to recognize the brand a lot easier. This task was very useful as it helped to understand how an advert should be designed to look and sound.

Task 5 was one of the most enjoyable and most useful tasks on the blog as it involved designing a flowchart that would show the functionality of an app that tells a user how to make a cup of tea. The flowchart was really useful as it helped to give an understanding of how an app should function and how this functionality could be shown in diagram form. A flowchart for making a cup of tea is relatively simple to design, however when the concept of adding the app aspect to the flowchart it becomes more difficult, as it is not simply explaining how to make a cup of tea, it is explaining how an app would function while explaining how to make a cup of tea to a user.

The metadata post helps to show how information can be taken from a resource and then catalogued making it easily searchable when online, this task helped to understand how search engines works and how information of a resource is collected.

Research

In order to create an application that will inform the user about some of the issues surrounding alcohol abuse, a lot of research was done the blog post titles ‘Research – alcohol awareness’ shows some of this research, the research was used to create the situations used in the scenarios. The research was also used to create the database of facts that are shown on the decision pages.

Research into how an apps works is also a useful post as it gives a basic understanding of what an app does and how it does it, this post has brought together different information from different sources which help to understand the basic mechanics of how an apps works.

Planning

This was a big part for the design of the application, this part of the process is the part the flowchart, the scripts; the storyboard and the page designs were created. The flowchart for the application goes into a lot of detail about how the pages link together and how scenario 1 will play out. The flowchart helped in developing ideas for the content that would be filmed. The script and the storyboard were very useful when planning the shoot and when filming.

Production

The filming process went relatively well, there was a slight altercation with the aspect ratio as without realizing the films were filmed in 16:9 (landscape) because the desired orientation was supposed to be portrait these shots had to be re-filmed, however they were relatively simple shots to film which meant they didn’t take too long to re-shoot. The most difficult shot to film was the one in which the user looks like he is driving, in order to make this as safe as possible to film, the camera man would lean over the driver and film from above his head, this is why this shot looks as if the user is looking down towards the friend.

Post production

The post production was relatively simple too, as the videos were created with a point of view style and were all single shots, which meant creating the sequence was also straightforward. It was however difficult to set up the workspace in adobe premier as the aspect ratio was not a landscape orientation, in order to achieve the desired ratio research was done to find out what aspect ratio the Iphone uses, it was found that the aspect ratio that needed to be for the editing was 2:3, once the workspace was correct there was also a problem when rendering the files as they would revert back to being 16:9 meaning that the render settings had to be adjusted too.

Business plan

The business plan post explains how the application will make money by using an ad banner which is shown in the designs, the use of the ad banner means that the app can be free to download but will still make revenue. The app being free is essential as the app is designed to be informative and to help the user, however the app still needs to make money. This post also highlights the expansion possibilities and how the app can branch out to cover other serious matters.

Database

The database post shows, the database that would be used in the app and it also shows how the app will use it, the database is filled with facts, these facts have a unique number which will be randomly generated to be added to the individual pages of the app.

Final video

The big video sequence that has been filmed looks how it should, the footage has been designed to be played on a mobile phone and the quality is very high for when it is done so, however if you play the video on a larger screen the video will lose some of its quality as it is not designed to be played on such a screen. The decision pages fit really well with the video files and they work well to demonstrate how scenario 1 will be played.

If the app was to be created, then the other three scenarios would have to be planned out and all of the video content would be filmed, if this were to happen more complicated videos could be filmed, such as the large party scene and the scenes involving the police. These video files would help to keep the interest of the user.

Content delivery

More and more content is being distributed on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, this is rapidly become a large source of advertising/marketing and in this current climate it doesn’t seem like it will be slowing any time soon. Apps are vastly becoming more popular with mobile phones developing constantly to support more and more advanced applications, even televisions are developing to accommodate applications, these ‘smart televisions’ use an interpretation on the mobile phone application, these will continue to develop until applications are on every television in every home.

Conclusion

Overall the app designs and functionality were as expected, the videos are of a high quality for what they are designed for and the designs of the pages fit the general theme of the application, time management was a slight issues as towards the end of the project things started to become a bit rushed however this did not the quality of the video content.

Business plan & expansion possibilities

Revenue

My application will be free to download which means it will need to use a different method to gain revenue, the method that I have chosen to use will be to advertise via an ad Banner at the top of the screen, this method could generate a lot of revenue for my app but this would depend on the amount of usage in which my app receives.

Information taken from an article titled 'How to make money with apps: Part 1

http://www.placeplay.com/how-to-make-money-with-apps-1/

A common question from app developers is: how much money can I make with banner ads? The answer, of course, is it varies.  For simplicity sake, we have provided an example with the following assumptions:
  • 10k daily active users (60% US, 40% WW)
  • Banner ads on all screens
  • 6 minute average session time (60k minutes/day)
  • Integrate PlacePlay for US & Admob for WW
Make Money with App Banner Advertising Example
In this scenario, an app developer can expect to make approximately $7,300 per month using mobile banner advertising. Mobile banner advertising can help app developers make a meaningful amount of money; but, like any form of app monetization it requires users. The more users of your app, the more money your app will generate with banner advertising.

Obviously using this method of gaining revenue will compromise the screen space, although I feel as if this is an easy compromise for the predicted return. The user may not like that there is an ad banner on the screen which is why they will have the option to pay to get it removed, this would cost the user a small fee.

Another way to make profit on the application would be to offer extra content to the user, this could be in the form of new scenarios, extra decisions and extra story-lines. The user would have to pay for certain content to be downloaded which will contribute to extra revenue for the app.

Certain campaigns such a the drinkaware campaign would be willing to pay to put there name/logo on the app if the application became popular enough, government run organizations would be more than happy to pay for the rights if it is for a good reason and enough people are benefiting from the advantages of the app.

Expansion

There is a lot of room for expansion and franchising of this app, as there are a lot more issues that the app could concentrate on for example;

  • Quit smoking
  • Sexual health
  • Cancer awareness
  • Drug awareness
This would mean that the users that enjoyed using this drink awareness app would download 'Sister apps' as they already know it would be an app that they would enjoy using.

Final Videos

Below are 4 completed video clips, these  4 videos will feature in scenario 1, the first is a long sequence that shows how the app works if the user was to only choose option B, the other 3 are the videos that would be played if the user took option A.

All of the video clips use an aspect ratio of 2:3 as this is the ratio that an Iphone uses to play video, the orientation of this video is different to that in which people are used to which makes the video content stand out, the videos below will look smaller than normal and the quality when played at full screen will not be great as they have been designed to play on a smaller screen in a portrait orientation.

Video sequence for scenario 1

The video below shows the sequence that would play if the user only chose option B, it consists of three video files these are;

  • Video 1.1
  • Video 1.1B
  • Video 1.2B
The sequence also contains two decision pages and shows how they will look, the decision pages do not stay on screen long enough to read all of the text as they are just there to demonstrate what would happen, the user would be able to read all of the text as the decision page would stay on the screen until the user chooses an option, in this video the button for option B starts to glow representing the user choosing it. The two decision pages that will be shown in this sequence are;
  • D1
  • D2
The video sequence is approximately 2minutes and 15 second long.

Video 1.1A

The video below shows the video that would play if the user chose option A on decision page 1 (D1) this clip is approximately 36 seconds long.

Video 1.2.1A

The video below shows the video that would play if the user chose option A on decision page 1 (D1) and option A on decision page 2 (D2), this clip is approximately 28 seconds long.

Video 1.2.2A

The video below shows the video that would play if the user chose option B on decision page 1 (D1) and option A on decision page 2 (D2), this clip is approximately 29 seconds long.

Database of facts

The decision pages will contain randomly generated facts, these facts will be taken from a database of 50 facts. Each fact has its own unique number, a random number generator will be used to pick a number between 1 and 50 what ever number it chooses the fact that has that number will be shown at the bottom of the decision page. the database of facts is shown below.

Database that is used to generate a random fact on the decision pages

Visual and functional designs

My app will be designed around a drinking theme, a lot of the pages on the app will contain alcoholic beverages, these images will not be used to promote or demote drinking they will simply be used to keep a constant motif throughout the application.

All of the designs and footage that has been created will only be for one of the scenarios, the other scenarios have not been created specifically but the concept will be the same for all four scenarios. The pages below are designed for Scenario 1 (under aged male).

Decision pages

The image below shows the initial designs for the decision pages, the pages contain a banner at the top which will be used for advertising, a text box which will be used to explain what is happening in the scenario and present the user with a choice. The choices on the page will be designed to look like beer mats, keeping in with the drinking theme.

Initial designs for the decision pages

The background for the decision pages will consist of a still image of an interior or exterior of a pub scene.

The decision pages are named D1 (decision 1), D2, D3 etc. relating to the name of the decision pages in the flow chart that can be seen in the next section.

Each of the decision pages contain two options, option A and option B. These option will allow the user to go to a different video, Option A is the best option for the user to choose and option B is the negative option, these options will be chosen by the user selecting one of the two buttons on the page, these buttons are designed to look similar to beer mats.

D1 choice A example
D1 choice B example

The first decision page that will be seen is decision page 1 (D1) as you can see from the image below the decision page contains a short description of what is going on is the sequence. On D1 the text reads 'Your friends want you to bring alcohol to the party, you have no money and you are underage, your parents have a cupboard full of alcohol. What do you do?' The user then has to decide what choice to pick (see above examples) once the user has decided he will simply click on the choice he wants and sequential video will be played. Each decision pages will contain a randomly generated fact that can be seen at the bottom of the page.

Each decision page below are all of the decision pages that will be in scenario 1.

Information and Home page

Below is the first design for the information page, this is the page that the user will use to input all of the relevant information that is needed to select a scenario. On this page the user will tell the app if they are male or female and they will also tell the app how old they are. This original page was designed to look like a bottle label, however I later decided to change this to look a bit more like the decision pages do.
Example of the initial information page
This final design for the information page is similar to the initial design, it is set out in a very formal way but still looks eye catching. The final design for the information page is shown below.

Information page
The home page is a very simple page which has been done in the same style as the information page, the background image is the same and they both contain a random fact at the bottom of the page. On the start screen there are simple red squares that will be used as buttons, I was originally going to use the beer mat designs as the buttons for the home page but the simple squares looked more effective.
Home page

The settings page hasn't been designed as it would be set out in the same as the information page and the home page.

Explanation page

The information page is a page that explains to the users that a previous action has affected the choices in which he can make. This page is designed in the same manner as the decision pages but the user doesn't have two options to choose from.

Sequence storyboard

There will be a long sequence that will show one of the ways in which the user can navigate through the app in scenario 1, this sequence will show the starter video and the user choosing option B on the first decision page, the next video, of the user stealing the alcohol and waiting for his friend will be played, the sequence will then show D2 and the user will again choose option B. The sequence will then conclude with a car crash. the storyboard below shows how the sequence will look.

The functionality of the application

The Flowchart below shows how the app will work. The flowchart highlights how each scenario will function by demonstrating the layout of scenario 1. the sub process of scenario 1 is color coordinated to make it easier to follow, the decision pages are shown in blue, all of the choice B lines and videos are shown in Green and all of the choice A lines and videos are shown is pink.

Scenario 1 breakdown (Male and underage)

This section describe what each video is and what each page in the scenario 1 sub-process is. this is color coordinated to match the flow chart.
Key:
Decision Page
Option A
Option B

1.1– This video is the starting video, the story will be set-up with a friends telling the user if he is coming to a party and tells him to bring alcohol.

D1 – This is the first decision page and the user will have the choice whether or not to steal the alcohol. Each decision will have an option A and an option B, option A will be the good option and option B will be the bad option.

1.1A – If the user decides not to steal the alcohol he will be shown closing the alcohol cupboard door and waiting for his friend without any alcohol.

1.1B – If the user decides to steal the alcohol, he be shown taking alcohol out of the cupboard and waiting for his friends to pick him up with a bag of alcohol.

D2 – This is the second decision page and will give the user the option to drive the car even though he doesn’t have a license or to tell his friend to walk.

1.2.1A – This video will be played if the user chooses not to drive and if the user chose option A for D1. The user will convince his friend to walk to the party and won’t have any alcohol. His friend is angry with him and they then go into the party.

1.2.2A – This video will be played if the user chooses not to drive but has chosen to steal the alcohol (D1 = B). If he does this, he will convince his friend to walk but will give him a drink making him less angry. They will then go into the party.

1.2B – If the user decides to drive he will crash the car and the application will end.

D3 – The user will see his friend getting into a heated argument; the user will have to decide if he joins in with the fight or if he pulls his friend away, stopping the fight.

1.3A – The user will help his friend by pulling him away from the fight, after he does this the police will enter the house.

1.3B – The user will begin to fight with his friend and will get hurt badly, the application will then end.

D4 – The user will have to decide if he should run away from the police or if he should stay.

1.4A – The user will decide to stay and the police will confiscate the alcohol and disperse the party.

1.4B – The user will throw a bottle in the direction of the police and then jump out of the window. The user begins to run away but eventually gets caught and arrested. The user will spend a night in jail. The application will then end.

D5 – The user will have to decide how to get home, his friend has left and he is on his own. Option A will only be available if D1=A

1.5A – The user will have the choice to ring his parents for a lift home, if the user previously decided to steal from his parents this option will not be available to him. The application will then end.

Explanation Page – The user will be told that option A is unavailable due to an earlier choice (D1=B)

1.5B – The user will decide to walk home, if he chooses this option he will be mugged, the application will then end.

Scripts

Each clip will consist of a little bit of dialogue which will help to tell a bit of the story, there will be six video clips in total but three of them will be shown in a sequence that will explain how the app will work. below are the scripts for each video clip and the long sequence.

Video 1.1A

The user has decided not to steal the alcohol and closes the cupboard door, he is then shown waiting for his friend to pick him up, he looks at his watch then his friend pulls up beside him in a car.

FriendAlright mate, I’m pretty wasted, do you want to drive?

Video 1.2.1A

The user has convinced his friend to walk to the party instead of driving. They are almost there and his friend isn’t happy that he has had to walk the whole way and that the user hasn’t bought any alcohol with him.

FriendOh my god mate, I can’t believe how far we just had to walk, just because you were too much of a wimp to get in the car, and who turns up to a party without any alcohol, you’re actually pathetic. Just try not to embarrass yourself or me at this party tonight.

The video then fades to black.

Video 1.2.2A

The user has convinced his friend to walk to the party instead of driving. They are almost there and his friend isn’t happy that he has had to walk the whole way, but is happy that the user has bought the alcohol with him.

Friend Oh my god mate, I can’t believe how far we just had to walk, just because you were too much of a wimp to get in the car, the least you can do is give me a beer, this party is going to be sick.

The video then fades to black.

Video sequence scenario 1

The user is sat at home Watching t.v. when he gets a phone call from his friend.

Friend (o/s)Alright mate. There is a big party tonight, makes sure you get some alcohol, don’t be a letdown, I’ll pick you up later. Cya.

The user then gets up and heads into the kitchen where he opens a cupboard to reveal a lot of alcohol.

(Decision page)

The decision page D1 will then appear and the user will choose option B and steal the alcohol.

The user will be shown taking the alcohol from the cupboard and then waiting for his friend with a bag full of alcohol. His friend pulls up in a car.

Friend - Alright mate, I’m pretty wasted, do you want to drive?

(Decision page)

The decision page D2 will then appear and the user will choose option B and drive the car. The user will be driving the car with his friend in the passenger seat.

Friend I can’t wait for this party I haven’t been out in ages. Hey you look pretty wasted already, fancy another drink? Yeah this party is going to be sick, I think its Darren’s party and they are always crazy, I can’t wait. Last time at Darren’s party… Woah watch out, watch out.

The car will then crash.
